Roles and Responsibilities
• Assigns and schedules specific tasks to workers and inspects completed work, such as maintaining and repairing masonry, plaster and mortar (which includes mixing, surface preparation, and application of the materials used).
• Plans work from blueprints or specifications, and lays out jobs, such as construction and repair of concrete structures (walls, bases, floors, stairways, curbs) requiring the use of hand and power cement mixers, air hammers, and other necessary tools and equipment.
• Directs and coordinates the assembly of materials.
• Construct block, stone, and brick walls, manholes, columns, partitions, and other structures by establishing grade, setting lines, constructing forms, determining and mixing or supervising the mixing of cement or mortar, pouring footings or foundation, and laying block, stone and brick
• Constructs, repairs or demolishes concrete bases, walls, floors, sidewalks, and roadways by using electric rotary hammers, air hammers, masonry saws, and other hand and power tools of the trade.
• Erect or supervise the erection of scaffolding and ramps and finishing of joints.
• Build or lay concrete structures such as sidewalks, porches, stairs, and floors by laying out and setting forms, establishing pitch, preparing base, mixing concrete, pouring, and finishing the surface.
• Instructs and participates in the more difficult and responsible phases of the work, such as construction, installation and repair of concrete, plaster, and tile.
• Maintains time, material, and work records to assure project completion time, proper inventory of materials, adequate monitoring of progress and records of materials and progress.
• Makes time, material, and labour estimates and reviews plans and specifications for potential new projects.
• Prepares surface with hand and power sanders and buffers before spreading paste on surface.
• Lays cement bricks and blocks for interior and exterior walls.
• Prepares and mixes materials for the work according to specifications, such as mortar, paste, cement, and slacking lime, using hand and power mixers.
• Applies first coat or finish coat of plaster using plastering devices such as trawls, also patches plaster breaks and cracks.
• Maintains equipment and tools used, such as mortar mixers, masonry saws, tuck pointers, grinders and electric hammers.
Working knowledge, skills and competencies and attributes
• Functional/Technical Skills
- Knowledge of the standard practices, processes, tools, equipment, and materials of masonry and plastering.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the trade.
- Skill in the application of plaster, and in cutting and laying of blocks, bricks, and tiles.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and materials.
- Ability to make simple arithmetic computations.
- Ability to operate necessary tools and equipment, such as mixers, compressors, power tools, trucks etc.
- Ability to construct forms.
- Ability to prepare time and material estimates.
- Ability to determine the quality of materials used.
- Ability to rig and work from scaffolds.
- Knowledge of all elements of masonry work.
- Knowledge of blueprint reading, specifications, building codes, trades manuals, and other building trades.
• Ability to train, instruct, and oversee other trades workers.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in diverse teams.
• Skills in organising resources and establishing priorities/targets.

Qualification and Experience
• Minimum of college Diploma or technical trade school certificate.
• Minimum of 5 years working experience in masonry/plastering trade.
